Payment Schedule and Receipts Record
The homeowner's record of the money side of a building job: the contract sum, the deposit and what it pays for (no law sets a maximum, what Citizens Advice, the HomeOwners Alliance and the Federation of Master Builders say as guidance, and when a term keeping a deposit may be unfair), the payment stages each tied to a point in the work you can both check, any retention in the contract and its release point, how you pay and exactly what section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 does and does not cover, the other routes to money back, any payment protection the builder uses (described neutrally), a receipts log with a running total, and what to do if a stage goes wrong or the builder takes the money and does not come back.

What it is not
It is not legal advice, it is not insurance, and it cannot make a builder or a neighbour do anything. It explains what the law in England and Wales says and gives you a clear record. For free advice on your own situation, ring the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
