HSE HSG274 — Legionnaires' disease: Technical guidance. Part 2: The control of legionella bacteria in hot and cold water systems (Second edition, 2024)

Provisions the documents cite: Part 2 — types and application of hot and cold water systems; water system design and commissioning; operation and inspection; water treatment and control programmes; microbiological monitoring; cleaning and disinfection; shared premises and residential accommodation (landlords); healthcare and care homes; Appendix 1 (legionella risk assessment) and Appendix 2 (legionella written control scheme). Part 1 (evaporative cooling systems) and Part 3 (other risk systems) are published with it.

What it requires

The technical guidance supporting ACOP L8 for hot and cold water systems: flushing, disinfection, temperature control, monitoring and records. There is a reasonably foreseeable legionella risk in a water system if water is stored or recirculated, the water temperature in all or part of it may be between 20 and 45 °C, there are deposits that can support bacterial growth, water droplets can be produced and dispersed, and employees, contractors, visitors or others could be exposed to contaminated droplets (Part 2 introduction, para 2).

How this entry is kept current

  • Citation status: cited from the primary source.
  • Watched by: HSE publication page — check series code, edition line and any withdrawal notice at each monthly horizon scan.
  • Source last checked by the automated scan: not yet — first scan pending.

Every source is re-checked monthly and the result is published in the scan log. A change that alters what a document should say raises a revision, and past buyers of that document are told.
